There is something timeless about sunsets in Crete. The island seems to slow down as the sun lowers, revealing layers of mountains, sea, and sky that shift through shades of gold, pink, and deep blue. From hidden coves near Kissamos to dramatic southern coastlines and quiet villages in the east, every sunset here feels different.
At Tella Thera in Kissamos, we are lucky to be surrounded by some of the most spectacular sunset landscapes in Crete. Over time, we’ve explored the island and gathered our favourite places to watch the day come to an end.
Falassarna Beach – The Classic Western Sunset
Falassarna Beach is one of the most famous sunset spots in Greece, and for good reason. Facing directly west, it offers an uninterrupted view of the sun sinking into the sea.
The beach is wide and open, so even on busy days you can always find your own quiet corner. As the sun drops, the sky turns into deep orange and soft pink tones reflected over the waves.
It’s a simple, powerful experience that never gets old.

Balos Lagoon – Golden Light from Above
Balos Lagoon is magical at any time of day, but late afternoon reveals a completely different side of it. From the viewpoint above, the lagoon becomes a painting of turquoise water, white sand, and soft golden light.
If you stay a little longer after the crowds leave, the silence and colours make it one of the most unforgettable views in western Crete.
Sfinari – A Quiet Fishing Village Sunset
Sfinari Beach is a small coastal village that feels untouched by time. The sunset here is calm, authentic, and deeply relaxing.
The sun disappears directly into the sea, while small fishing boats and nearby mountains turn into silhouettes. It’s best enjoyed slowly, perhaps with fresh fish at a local taverna by the water.
Afrata – A Hidden Gem Near Kissamos
Afrata Beach is a quiet cove surrounded by cliffs and olive groves. It remains one of the lesser-known sunset spots near Kissamos.
The view is simple but beautiful: open sea, rugged coastline, and warm light fading into the horizon. A small taverna above the beach makes it perfect for a relaxed evening.
Gramvousa Peninsula – Wild and Dramatic
Gramvousa offers a raw and untouched landscape where sunset feels almost cinematic. Rocky coastlines and distant islets create dramatic silhouettes as the sun sets over the horizon.
It is ideal for those who love exploring wilder, less structured environments.
Ravdoucha – Sunset Over the Cliffs
Ravdoucha
Ravdoucha is a small village perched above the sea on the Rodopou Peninsula. The views here stretch endlessly across the coastline.
As the sun sets, the cliffs glow in warm colours and the sea below slowly darkens. It’s quiet, authentic, and incredibly atmospheric.
Chania Old Venetian Harbour – Iconic Lighthouse Sunset
Chania Old Venetian Harbour
The Old Venetian Harbour of Chania is one of the most iconic sunset locations in Crete. The lighthouse at the entrance of the harbour becomes a silhouette against a glowing sky.
Street musicians, cafés, and reflections on the water create a lively and cinematic atmosphere.

Elafonissi – Soft Colours and Pink Sand
Elafonissi Beach
Elafonissi Beach transforms at sunset into a peaceful, pastel-coloured landscape. The famous pink sand and shallow waters reflect the soft evening light beautifully.
When the crowds leave, the beach becomes calm and almost dreamlike.
Matala – Sunset with History and Music
Matala Beach is famous for its caves and bohemian past. Sunset here feels relaxed and nostalgic, with warm light hitting the cliffs and soft music often playing in the background.
It’s one of the most atmospheric sunset spots in southern Crete.
Agios Pavlos – Dunes and Silence
Agios Pavlos Beach is known for its dramatic sand dunes and remote location. The sunset here is raw and quiet, with soft light falling over the desert-like landscape.
It is one of the most peaceful sunset experiences in southern Crete.
Rethymno – Sunset with a Historic Skyline
Rethymno Old Town offers a different kind of sunset experience, where Venetian architecture meets the sea.
The old harbour and city lights create a warm, romantic atmosphere as the sun disappears behind the coastline.
Fortezza of Rethymno
The Venetian fortress overlooking the old town still dominates the skyline. Built at the end of the 16th century, it is an ideal viewpoint to watch the sun set over the sea and the mountains of Crete.
Xerokampos – Eastern Crete’s Hidden Sunset
Xerokampos in the Lasithi region is one of the most untouched coastal areas of Crete.
Sunsets here feel incredibly peaceful. Wide beaches and surrounding mountains create a sense of isolation and calm, with the sun setting directly into the Libyan Sea in total silence.
It is one of those places that feels far away from everything, perfect for ending a day in eastern Crete.
Lighthouse of Gavdos – The Edge of Europe
At the southernmost edge of Europe, the lighthouse of Gavdos offers one of the most overwhelming sunset views imaginable.
Here, the sun sinks directly into the sea from one of the most remote points in the Mediterranean. Gavdos, often associated with myth and solitude, is a place to disconnect completely and lose track of time.
