## Atmosphere

Tella Thera promotes a calm, slow-living atmosphere centred on privacy, nature, and understated luxury. Sandy-toned concrete curves and weathered rock walls appear to have sprouted from the earth, cascading down two hillsides like an amphitheatre shaped by nature. The design, water elements, and open views toward Kissamos Bay and the olive-grove-covered mountains create a sense of quiet immersion rather than spectacle.

By day, cicadas chorus in surround sound, flowerbeds cast bloom-shaped shadows across walls turned caramel in the afternoon light, and whether sipping a cocktail from a poolside cabana, practising yoga at the bamboo-topped rooftop shala, or dining at Anemoia, bay views take centre stage.

It is an environment that encourages rest, meaningful connection, and a deeper appreciation of Crete's landscape and culture. The nature-inspired suites start at a luxurious 140 m² and offer sweeping views of the Aegean Sea and the undulating hills of the surrounding olive groves. All suites feature luxurious beds with Coco-Mat mattresses, calming interiors, panoramic views of the Bay of Kissamos, floor-to-ceiling arched windows, soothing stone details, cooling cavernous designs, and private terraces with sea views.

Each suite is designed with half of it nestled within the earth and the other half under a beautifully planted rooftop adorned with native plants and olive trees that were repurposed and replanted from the original property. The subterranean design provides natural cooling and ultimate privacy.

## Architecture and Design

The unique nature-inspired buildings were designed by Stella Pieri and her team at Pieris Architects, an award-winning boutique firm based in Athens that specializes in bioclimatic building design. The landscape was designed by landscape architect Karolos Chanikian. The architecture embodies the philosophy of "Future Primitivism" — an elegant merger of ancient building wisdom and cutting-edge sustainable technology.

Buildings follow the slope of the land and roofs planted with olive trees allow Tella Thera to feel like a natural extension of its surroundings. Earth tones, unprocessed wood, and organic textures evoke calm, grounding guests in a sensory experience. Subterranean suites nestle into the earth, offering natural cooling and ultimate privacy.

The resort is spread across a 15,000 m² plot, with every amenity having its own building. Skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows harness natural sunlight, allowing for maximum cross-ventilation. Planted rooftops above each suite decrease heat absorption and reduce strain on cooling systems. Wooden furnishings are made with FSC-certified wood, handcrafted by a carpenter located just 7.3 km from the property.

## Our Story

Tella Thera was founded by husband-and-wife Loukas Tourkomanis and Chevon Low, who first met working at Airbnb. After years spent in fast-paced tech careers — constantly glued to their screens — they found themselves yearning for a place to disconnect to reconnect.

Their vision was shaped by two complementary backgrounds. Tourkomanis grew up in Athens, where his home was a constant whirlwind of family hosting friends — a love for authentic Greek hospitality was woven into his upbringing. Low is Singaporean, studied tourism as Marina Bay Sands was coming to life, and became a committed sustainability advocate, going on to helm a non-profit focused on haze pollution prevention. Together, they shared the belief that tourism and hospitality, done right, can conserve what is precious.

Equipped with a deep understanding of what heartfelt hospitality looks like — shaped by hundreds of Airbnb stays rich in personal recommendations and human connection — they set out to create a place where locals and global visitors could gather and experience authentic Cretan hospitality while immersed in the landscape.

The former olive grove where Tella Thera now stands was the first site they visited. On arrival, the owner's free-roaming white horse, Artemis, galloped up to them unprompted, as if welcoming them in. Despite extensive time exploring the Kissamos coastline, nowhere topped it. After nine months getting to know its third-generation farmer owners over taverna suppers, the sale was secured. The year-and-a-half build began in February 2024, with preservation of the grove's original olive trees paramount throughout.

Since starting the project, Tourkomanis and Low relocated from Singapore to Kissamos and are now embedded in the local community. They know the farmers who supply the restaurant, the artisans whose work adorns the walls, and the experiences they recommend are the couple's own favourites — the same ones they shared with their nearest and dearest during their own wedding celebrations.

## Origin of the Name

The name Tella Thera was dreamt up to encapsulate the property's ethos. The first part derives from Tellus — meaning both Mother Earth and, in Greek mythology, the happiest man on earth — reflecting the joy and preciousness of nature. The second part comes from the ancient Greek word Theros, meaning harvest, signifying the careful stewardship of the land needed for it to flourish. It also means summer, and forms part of the word therapon, meaning therapy — a nod to nature's healing power. Combined, Tella Thera means Earth as a goddess, Happiness, Taking care of the land, Summer, and Wellness.

Tella Thera is tucked away in the western part of Chania, Crete, on a hidden hill full of olive trees, situated in the westernmost part of the island of Crete, in the charming municipality of Kissamos.

## Anemoia Restaurant

Anemoia Restaurant is named after the wistful nostalgia for a time you've never known. It invites guests to dine with intention, honoring timeless traditions while nurturing a sustainable future. An all-are-welcome atmosphere, inspired by Cretan home kitchens, reigns throughout.

At the helm of Anemoia's open kitchen is Chania-born head chef Markos Marmatakis, whose menu follows a locavore, plant-forward approach with some meat and fish options. The dish lineup changes twice yearly, following the land's rhythms, with occasional specials spotlighting the best produce of the moment.

The low-waste foundations of the restaurant were built by zero-waste chef consultant Maurice Mc Geehan (known as @thenowastechef), who advised on equipment choices — including a charcoal grill and fermentation buckets — and techniques such as pickling, fermentation, and creating powders from leftover ingredients. The result is a root-to-tip, local land-and-sea-to-plate approach: citrus rind becomes sorbet, herb stalks become flavourful powders, and fish intestines are used for garum sauce.

95% of ingredients come from Crete, sourced from ethical local producers including honey from Meli Papapiary, cheese from the local cheesemaker, and fish from small-scale fishmonger Kapenekis. Masses of time have been spent meeting local producers to ensure aligned values and ethics.

Signature dishes include charred carob bread, warm olives with orange, cinnamon and star anise, roasted celeriac with staka cream and truffles, and a reimagined Dakos — the traditional Cretan rusk salad — served as a tomato gazpacho with xinomizithra cheese mousse, confit tomatoes, olives, and herb-fermented critamo. The chef's signature dessert riffs on a childhood favourite of bread with olive oil and sugar: leftover bread turned into a toasted mousse and pudding, with pasteli, olive oil ice cream, and olive marmalade.

The elliptical terracotta brick bar wraps around an olive tree at the restaurant's heart. Cocktails and mocktails capture the flavours of the mountain slopes — think tea, mint and lemongrass with olive sugar and soda, or Tsikoudia (raki) infused with pineapple tea and spices. The wine list features plenty of Cretan and Greek options.

Outdoor dining is available on the pergola-covered terrace, with sea views. Guests can also dine under the stars or enjoy a grazing platter in the garden.

The Thaleria Spa is reached by a curling staircase that descends around a dramatic, open-to-the-sky cylindrical drum. Low-lit arched corridors, scented with mint, eucalyptus, and neroli, lead to four treatment rooms.

Therapies are inspired by Stoic philosophy and designed to balance the four natural elements — fire, air, earth, and water. Treatments include deep tissue massages, lymphatic massage, all-natural BioAroma botanical facials, and made-for-two treatments. Therapists use handcrafted oils infused with indigenous botanicals and balms enriched with nutrient-rich extracts.
